The A K and V are just fantastic !

Agreed. Well done Antonio! I’m particularly fond of the bold version.

Thanks guys!

“Almost a year in the making, Enotmik is now available as a two weight display font. Designed on a grid, Enotmik is made up of 90º and 45º angles and pays homage to legendary typefaces Helvetica and Avant Garde.”
I mean, it´s quite nice and all and I don´t want to be harsh, but I can´t believe this took almost a year! It´s grid based and pretty straight, so I´d say it should have been done in a week or so… It hasn´t even got lower cases. And since it´s grid-based, especially the B and the S look very inbalanced. It certainly needs some more finetunung to be not only mathematically correct.
Avant Garde? Maybe. But I can hardly see any references to Helvetica in it - sans serif, but that´s about it. It´s maybe more like Eurostile or something.

Well it took a year no cause it was complicated but cause I procrastinated. I worked on it on and off for a year. Even though it looks simple and was based on a grid, I went through a few versions of this to get each character just perfect.
As for the B and S looking inbalanced, I’m really not sure what you’re seeing cause it’s based on the grid and it follows all of the rules of the typeface. And I have no idea what you mean by Mathematically correct.
The typeface was inspired by both Avant Garde and Helvetica, which doesn’t mean that you specifically have to have exact replicas of those faces. But there are some references to bot faces. For example the K is inspired by the K in Helvetica and the slanted A and V are references to the Alternates version of Avant Garde.
Eurostile? Dude I think you need to get your eyes check. Seriously.

When constructing letters on a grid, you often have to decide: follow the rules of the grid or make it typographically correct. You obviously decided to follow the grid - which is OK, but the result are imbalanced letters like the S or the B in Entomic. For example, the upper lobe of the B should be a little smaller than the lower lobe. By mathematically, I mean that you choose to make both lobes the exact same size (numerical), or to set the middle stroke of the E exactly in the middle between the upper and the lower stroke. Mathematically correcht, but optical imbalanced. Concerning the S: the upper stroke appears just too long (but fitting “mathematically” in the grid), causing an overweight at the right top making the whole letter look imbalanced (like tilting to the right).
That´s all OK sice its a strictly grid based font! Thats the fucking CONCEPT behind it, and I acknowledge that (so don´t feel offended).
And, before telling me to go and see an eye specialist, please compare yourself:

To me Entomic has a lot more features (the rectangular style!) inspired by Eurostile than Helvetica (maybe unconcious).
Please excuse my poor english, it´s hard to write about somethig as specific as typography in a foreign language (and to have only a few lines to make your point).
AisleOne Says:
I wasn’t offended at all. I did follow the rules of the grid but I also designed the glyphs so that they’re optically correct. The middle arm in the E and the lower arm in the F don’t go all the way to the end. The upper and lower arms of the S also don’t go to the end as well in the 2,3,5,6 and 9. I spent considerable time with these characters to make sure they felt balanced. If I shortened the arms on any of these characters, they would feel very imbalanced. It’s all been considered, trust me. As for the B, the upper lob being the same size at the lower one was a design decision and I think it still works optically. Rules can be broken and in this face they do brake them quite often, slanted characters, filled in counters, etc.

on another note… I just realised how subtle the Q is..

Personally the Q is my favorite character in the set.
