Safari 3.1 for Windows and Mac supports the embedding of sfnt fonts (TrueType, OpenType PS, OpenType TT) using the font-face declaration. Technically the fonts are not embedded in the website, but they are simply linked like an image file. One big dilemma though. Due to permissions you cannot legally upload commercial fonts to a public web server, thats why you are limited to only freeware fonts. In my opinion, what’s the difference from embedding types in flash, there must be a solution for this, some way to protect the fonts? I’m so tired of using only web-supported fonts. This quote from John Gruber sums up the dilemma: “The fonts you’re allowed to embed legally aren’t worth using; the fonts that are worth using aren’t embeddable.”.
But I guess this is a step in the right direction. And as always, Apple is the one to take the lead. Am I wrong? :)
Thanks to Ralf Herrmann!

This is just brilliant! This has not yet been formally announced, but it’s fully functional and open to all. FontStruct is a free font-building tool from the retailer of digital type, FontShop. FontStruct lets you quickly and easily create fonts constructed out of geometrical shapes, which are arranged in a grid pattern, like tiles or bricks. You create ‘FontStructions’ using the ‘FontStructor’ font editor. Once you’re done building, FontStruct generates high-quality TrueType fonts, ready to use in any Mac or Windows application.

John Caserta has an interesting project on creating various letters from helvetica contained around a cube shape. As a result of this process he has created some interesting forms. I wonder what flat shapes you could produce by inking it up, applying it to paper and rolling it across the page?

As I was going through my class mates sites I came across this little type gem. From the designer,
“After a wonder around the permanent collection of the Tate Modern, we had to select one work as inspiration to base a new typeface on. At least six characters had to be produced in order to show our methodologies of how the letter forms would be created. I choose an oil on canvas entitled ‘K VII 1922′ by László Moholy-Nagy. I was attracted to the use of geometric shapes and bold lines and saw potential in forming a solid blocky typeface. From the chosen work I made up a universal template to base my characters on. It is very similar to how digital clock numbers are formed”
