In 1980, the Haas type foundry, birthplace of Helvetica, contracted Team’77 to audit the Helvetica typeface and reissue an improved version. Team’77, consisting of André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt, set out to “correct” common issues found in grotesk typefaces.

Click here to view scans of a promotional publication by Team’77 outlining the strategy and realization of Haas Unica. Presently, the Linotype and Scangraphic foundries both claim ownership of the type family and thus, Haas Unica is commercially unavailable.

After years of following a trail of images I finally know more about one of my personal icons of design…and how close it came to disappearing. Today Jim Schachterle posted about Gastrotypographicalassemblage, Lou Dorfsman’s typographic masterpiece. Together with Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase, Dorfsman created the largest typographic monument in existence for a wall in the CBS cafeteria. After many years of neglect, The Center for Design Study is now working hard to restore this piece of American design history. Look and learn.
